Basic Guidelines

Words

Doh Jahng (doe-jang) – Karate classroom

Doh Bohk (doe-bok) – karate uniform

Kee-yi (key-eye) to yell or scream – done when kicking, punching, or coming to attention

Bowing in class

When you are told to line up, you bow and say ‘yes sir’ or ‘yes ma’am’. When a black belt approach’s you or you go to them you must bow at first and when you’re done talking. In Tae Kwon Do as well as the martial arts in general the black belts are like the officers in the military. When an officer approach’s you or you pass them or they come in the room, all the soldiers salute them. In the martial arts you bow to the black belts.

As for bowing to a black belt outside of class, when you become structured as a warrior, just as a soldier is in the military, you will want to bow to a black belt where ever you see them. This also includes black belts bowing to senior black belts.
